Welcome to the RootsWeb Mailing List for the 8th Texas Cavalry (Terry's
Texas Rangers).

Not to be confused with the Texas Rangers of the Texas frontier or law
enforcement, Terry's Rangers were a Confederate Cavalry Regiment that served
East of the Mississippi during the War Between the States, 1861-1865. All
volunteers, they were universally recognized for their skill and willingness
to fight. They served under Generals such as Nathan Bedford Forrest, Joe
Wheeler, John A. Wharton, and Thomas Harrison. Following their first battle
at Woodsonville, Kentucky in December of 1861, Terry's Rangers went on to
participate in the Battle of Shiloh, Forrest's Murfreesboro Raid, the Battle
of Perryville, the Battle of Stone's River, Wheeler's Tennessee Raid, the
Battle of Chickamauga, the Siege of Knoxville, the Atlanta Campaign, and the
Carolinas Campaign. Their final engagement was at Bentonville, North
Carolina on March 21, 1865. Additionally, handpicked men were pulled from
their ranks for use in special operations and scouting expeditions. Men from
Terry's Rangers formed the core body of Shannon's Special Scouts as the
opposed Sherman in his March across Georgia and into the Carolinas.

I am the webmaster for the Online Archives of Terry's Texas Rangers at
