Becky,
I can tell you something about being a member of DAR. I am the Regent
for our local chapter. I did not go in on the Edmondson line, but am a
descendant of Celia Edmondson m. Dixon Harp. I am trying to find her
parents.
The easiest thing to do is find a chapter near you and tell them you
would like to become a memeber. They will talk to you and look at what you
have as far as documentation for your lineage. Two member of a chapter will
recommend you and you will be accepted as a prospective member. After you
have gathered your information and organized it, you may find a spot where
you are having real trouble. The Chapter is supposed to help you, if they
can. If not, they may refer your problem to the State Society for assistance
and then to the National Society, if necessary.
From there, you will receive a work sheet showing the generations so
that you may compile your information and organize your proof.
Yes, you have to prove your lineage and the service of your ancestor.
If someone is already a member using your ancestor you may cite their
papers as to lineage and service.
For at least the first three generations (you, your parents and your
grandparents) a birth certificate is required for each party , a copy of
marriage license for each marriage and death certificates ( if applicable) .
You may use Wills, Bible Records, pictures of Cemetery Markers (if they
denote relationship), Census records 1850 and later because they show
families, Probate Records, Land Records, etc. Anything that is an official
document that shows a relationship. Also printed material is acceptable, if
the author states sources for information.
Hope this helps, if you have any other questions that I might be able to
help with, I will be glad to try.
Fran
