My great-great-grandfather was born in Ruardean Woodside in 1867, the illegitimate son of Julia Hale. She also had another illegitimate child George Hale born in 1870. In the 1871 census, Julia is shown working as a 'charwoman'. As the family story goes, she was working in service to a local landed family and became pregnant by one of the gentlemen of the house. She clearly was working as a servant at the time of her sons' birth so there may be some truth in the story. The alleged name of the family was CHIVERS. Were there ever any Chivers' living in this area, perhaps in the 1881 census?
