Dear List,

The 1829 Baptism record of Hannah Herbert in Drybrook gives the abode of her parents, John and Sarah Herbert as 'Chesnuts' and her father's occupation as a woodman. I'm very interested in finding out more about this place where my ancestors lived, obviously it should be shown as 'Chestnuts' and, from John Herbert's occupation, I'm guessing it was some kind of lodge or cottage in the woods (perhaps close to some chestnut trees?) where John worked doing whatever it is that 'woodmen' do - is this like a park-keeper or game-keeper? I'd love to know if it still exists and how it looked back then. Both long before and long after 1829 the family lived in Brierley and John was a labourer so their time at 'Chestnuts' was brief but it may be in the vicinity of Brierley.

Best wishes
James
