John,
I have a book that has a timeline with pictures of markers, symbols,
etchings, etc. If you can scan and send me the picture, I'll be glad to
look in my book.

Lorrie

Subject: [GA-CEM-PRESERVATION] Dating grave markers?

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can direct me to an online site or other source
that will help me determine the approximate date of grave markers based the
style, material, method of engraving, method of setting, etc. (that is, to
tell if a marker was placed at the time of death or later - or in the case
where there is no death date given on the marker, when it might have been
placed).

In particular, I have a photo of a marker for my gg-grandmother's brother,
who d. in 1862, and I want to find out if the marker pictured would have
been placed during the Civil War era or was made later. The marker has
since been lost.

Thanks,

John in TX
