I am descended from the Thomas Dickson who married Salatha Kinsey in Hancock
Co, GA, 7 Feb 1811. His family was listed on the 1830 Census in Hancock
Co, and in 1840 they were listed in Talbot Co (as Dixon). Thomas was
probably the son of the Thomas Dickson who died in 1827, at least a Thomas
appears in the estate records. The other children of Thomas (Sr) were
Josiah, James, Rutha, David, Lucinda (married Henry Rogers), Green
Washington, and Lurana (married James M. Warthen) who are named in what I
have seen of the estate records and John, Nancy (married Thomas Eubanks),
Mary (married Lemuel D. Smith), Margaret (married Exra S. Howard), and
Melinda (married William B. Warthen) who are also reported as children.
I found the family listed in "The Georgians, Geneologies of Pioneer
Settlers", by Jeanette Holland Austin but there are some statements that
conflict with other information. Summarising the book, Michael Dickson Sr
was in Lunenburg Co, VA and Caswell Co, NC. His sons are shown as Michael
Jr and Josiah. Josiah died in Person Co, NC, Michael Jr moved to GA by
1793. He had land in Effingham and Washington (became Hancock) Counties,
and died 1803.
Michael Jr's children are named as John, Benjamin, William, Curry, Cyrus,
David, Sarah Elizabeth, Lucy Crawford, and Thomas. John was executor of the
estate so he is probably correct. A Thomas Dickson was named as an
appraiser of the estate so unless there was another Thomas that is
questionable. Also, Thomas is confused between father and son -- his
marriages show Selita Kinsey, which is correct for the son, and Anna McCook
in Wilson Co, GA, who must have married some other Thomas (Thomas Sr's widow
was Elizabeth).
Can anybody add information to help sort out this family?
Thanks
Elaine Oakes
