COMES Mrs. Marietta G., 89, a longtime resident of Duncan, died Tuesday night
in a Duncan hospital following a short illness. Funeral services will be 2:00
p.m. Friday at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan, Ok. Burial will
be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Duncan, Ok. Mrs. Comes was the widow of
Elmer Comes, who preceded her in death on August 28, 1992. Mrs. Comes, a
resident of Duncan since 1947 when her husband established Comes Construction
Company, was a member of the Westside Christian Church. In her earlier years,
she also was an avid golfer and bowler. Mrs. Comes was born on August 29, 1905
at Big Cabin, Ok., the daughter of William J. and Mary Elizabeth Jennings
Gambill. The family later lived in Adair, Strang, Pensacola and Webb City, Ok.
It was at Webb City where she met her future husband, an oilfield worker who
migrated to Oklahoma from Kansas with his father. Mrs. Comes and Elmer were
married July 19, 1923 at Pawhuska, Ok. and followed the oil boom to Weleetka
in 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Comes later lived in other Oklahoma locations including
Oklahoma City before moving to Michigan, where they lived for several 1 years.
They returned to Oklahoma and located at Duncan in 1947. Mrs. Comes was the
mother of two children who died in childbirth. Mrs. Comes was preceded in
death by three sisters, Metta Strelow of Vinita, Ok., Veta Bowen of Texon, Tx.
and Verna Chatterton of Port Lavaca, Tx.; four brothers, Horace Gambill,
William Gambill, Cecil Ray Gambill and Troy T. Gambill. Mrs. Comes is survived
by three nieces, Fay Gray of Slaton, Tx., Gwen Querry of Bella Vista, Ar. and
Ruth M. Wakeland of Bishop, Tx.; three nephews, Glyndon Bowen of Sacramento,
Ca., Max R. Gambill of Kingwood, Tx. and Ray E. Gambill of Oklahoma City, Ok.
Mrs. Comes is also survived by her two "adopted" children, Rose and Bill Clark
of Duncan.
