We have a Web Site dedicated to our known family. Gardner/Garner of Cleveland Co., NC. Reached by "www.shelby.net/marilynn But we have no idea where we came from.

I shall give you the details and if it fits anyone, contact me. My father told me that years ago, he saw a deed to some land in Marseille, France. It was made out to Guarnieur. That established, I'll go on to say some of us think Scots, some English, some Irish, some German. We have no idea.

The first of our known family was William, showing up in what was then Rutherford Co., NC (now Cleveland), and we have found several deeds, land transactions, etc. in the 1780s. We descend from one of two known sons, Thomas. The other was William, Jr. In one transaction, Thomas spelled his name "Tomas Garnear". They began as Garner, then it became Gardner.

We have all of the family of Thomas. It is just the background we lack. Were they French Hugenots? Were they Jacobites? There is a large family, Jean Gardner, that seems to fit and yet they don't have a William of the right age.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing from them.
