Hi Brandon,

I have been doing some research today (its what I do for a living) and I'd
like to try to make another offer toward the Garrigus Brother's photos and
letter archives.

First, I have a question. What do you know of the provenance of these photos
and letters? I feel I can verify the letters based on content once I see
them. The excerpts you read me over the phone have me convinced of their
authenticity. I am a little less comfortable with the photos. I think I can
recognize the Jacob Henry photo but the one of Horace is hard to verify. I
just want to make sure that they are truly Jacob and Horace before I spend
the money.

Based on discussions with several appraisers they recommend that we pay in
the neighborhood of $50-75 a letter and possibly more for letters with good
battle content or on patriotic lettersheets (like the Burnside letterhead
you mentioned). Without first seeing the content we're willing to pay about
$70 apiece for each letter written during the war. We'll pay $80 for the
letter on the Burnside letterhead. We'll pay $50 for any letters written pre
or post war and $75 for both photos unless provenance is shown proving the
authenticity of both. If Horace or Jacob Henry had been general officers or
had been involved in events of more obvious historical significance we'd
have a different situation but fortunately for our wallets they were good,
hard-working non-com's as was I.

Based on this guidance, once I receive and reimburse you for copies, I'd
like to try to make another bid for the original letters and photos to keep
them in the family. We (the family) are going to be willing to pay more for
these than other collectors simply based on the family connection so we'll
see you to a decent profit. However, most of the family are probably not
going to be interested based on the price range but I'm a geeky, romantic
history lover so I'm willing to deal here. However, we need to start the
bidding in a more reasonable range as $6000 is about triple the going market
value for these items. I've communicated this information around the "family
horn" so we'll all be on the same sheet of music on this and won't be
subject to bidding against each other.

Rounding up to make it even, my initial offer for the entire set is $1500.
I'll also throw in my services free of charge to make graphics for your new
website if that's of any value to you. By the way, what is your website
address?

Our ultimate intent is to bring these letters back into the family holdings
and eventualy get them to an archives for posterity. I am afraid that they
may be broken up and sold piecemeal so not only do you have a chance to make
a little money here but you'd be doing a great service for the
Garrigues/Garrigus family.

Hello there,

With much trouble I hope I have truly found the Family of Horace and J.
Henry Garrigus. Who fought with co. E of the 8th connecticut under Burnside
during the Civil War. Into my possession has come a fine collection of 2
Photos one of each Brother in Uniform from the War. The photo I have of
Horace is different than the one you show, However it is easy to tell they
are the same person. He has a untrimmed beard and holding the Corp. Hat.
Also, I have 21 letters written by both brothers to their family
dating 1861-1895. They Chronical from the time both brothers enlisted (they
write their father to tell him) through the end of the war. Each letter is
in amazing condition and speaks of Battles and personal issues. J. Henry
was promoted to Sgt. After suffering two wounds one in the Hip at Antietam,
and once in the head at althal Junction.
The Civil War artifact dealers interested in the letters and photos
have stated that they have hardly or never seen a collection so complete and
detailed. I am amazed at the detail and content myself. How they came to
rest in East Tn, we will probably never know.
