My great grandpa was Ruben H. Gerber. He had (that I know of for sure) 2 brothers Samuel and Adolph (changed from wolf?). My great aunt says there was 2 sisters as well. She thinks Bertha and Anna. Their mother was Helen Faye and their dad was Israel Pfeiffer. All 3 brothers were tailors. Ruben lived in hartford ct (and bridgeport before that) and had a mens clothing shop. Adolph and Samuel lived in San Francisco.

It is unclear why they had the surname Gerber if their dad was named Pfeiffer but my understanding is it was not uncommon in Austria Hungary to have a religious wedding but not register it properly with the authorities and thus the kids have the mother's surname.

I found documents on JRI-Poland which show his birth and a bunch of siblings. The index says the mother was Chaje Feige Gerber (yiddish version helen faye) The father listed was Israel/Srul Fiffer for 2 kids. The others didn't show. I ordered the records but have not gotten them yet.

I also knew of a KNOWN cousin per my great aunt named the same name as my great grandpa. Ruben H Gerber. He was a doctor in NY. Don't know much else.

I have located the decendants of Samuel Gerber (changed to Tanner) recently in California. To my knowledge noone has the name gerber in our known family.

I have 2 old pictures form Stanislau which may be the family or cousins.
