Hi Chuck and Deane

I had a lot of problems trying to pronounce some of the german vowels with
or without Umlauts (the dot thingies). The easiest way to pronounce the 'ö'
is translate it to an english 'er', 'Schröth' is then pronounced in english
more like 'Schrerth'. An 'au' in german is pronounced more like an 'ow' like
in cow. Remembering this has helped me and others in my german class a lot
with our pronunciation problems (it is also how the teachers explained how
it is pronounced when we were having problems).

Deane,

There are better experts on this list than me, but my maternal side is
SCHRÖTH and my oldest Uncle pronounced it like SCHRAUTH. I am told that the
way to pronounce "ö" which equals "oe" is to form your mouth like you are
going to say "oh" but say "e" instead... comes out sort of like a sick "a"
when I do it.

Good luck, I'm sure you will get better answers from others.

Question: I'm told my immigrant ancestor changed his name in America
from Schröeder to Shrader.
Shrader is pronounced with a long 'a' in English. Would Schröeder be the
closest to Shrader in German?

Thanks.

PS - His name is Daniel Shrader b. 25 Nov. 1802 in Baden-Baden, Germany
