In our family there were several women with the birth name Meta......my aunt was Meta Elizabeth, her aunt was Meta Henriette, etc. Both of these women went by the nickname Mae.

I think your Meta, Metta, Mette is a nickname for Margaretha. Margaretha
would be the call name (what they are known by), what we in America call a given
name, a subtle difference.

Hi Manaia and Cecelia,

Meta or Metta would be considered a shortened version
of the first name of Margaret much like, as an
analogy, Maggie would be a shortened version of
Margaret in Scotland.

Hope this helps.

Kathleen

Is the name "Metta" just a name and if so is there an
English variation?

Or is there significance for "Metta" when placed
before a christianed name? e.g., Metta Maria Flessel.
Could "Metta" be for "Mrs." in german?

Hi!

Since the first rule of German research is to contact the local church, you
can check with the FHL at SLC and that failing, you can write
to..............

Pfarrhaus
Neustadt 40
06547 Stolberg Harz
Germany

or call........

011 49 346 54276

Need help with that?

:-)

Kenneth, I looked oncemore and I think that Stolberg is included with their local government into the local gov. from Rossla a little city beside Stolberg E-Mail: thats the email from the majors office.
I think it is better to ask there about where you can get any info on Stolberg.
