Dear List,
I have gotten a bit of information from the NYC and Brooklyn lists on my husband's ggrandparents and their offspring but just found this list and hope that maybe you can be of even more help.
My husband's ggrandparents were Johannes (John) and Magdelena (Lena, Madeline) LAY/LEY
SPONHEIMER. They came with three children Karl(Charles) and twins Adolph/Otto and Eliz. to Manhattan, NY thru Castle Garden in 1864, from Rehborn, Germany.. I thought they had 5 children but come to find out they had 10, even though I do not know all their names just yet, I do have most of them, including my husband's grandfather Fredrick who married Katerina(Catherine) Witt.. John died in 1880 and she in 1927.
I have been having a hard time trying to find some of the birth certificates in those early years if there were any and so would love to be able to fine the baptismal certs. from any or all of them. I am not sure if they went to the Lutheran or Catholic church at that time. I think that he was Protestant ad she might have been Catholic. I have church lists here but would anyone on this list have a better idea of where they might have gone to church at that time? I think they probably started out at least with the Lutheran or Protestant but not positive.
I finally did find a couple of birth certs very early on. In 1869, when Christian they lived in what looked like either 116 or 106 Ridge Street. In 1871 when Ludwig (Louis) was born they lived in 111 Sheriff St. I still don't have anything for Julia, John, Jr. and whoever else was born after that.. Frederick, my husband's grandfather was apparently born in 632 East 11th St.. John Sr. died while residing at 219 Ave. C.
Would anyone have any idea at that time (bet. 1865-1880 where they might have gone to church while still speaking German? I thought that some of you might have more of an idea since this isa German list.
I would so appreciative if anyone could give me an educated guess of possible Protestant and then possibly some Catholic churches they might have attended . I am guessing I should start with the Lutheran churches but am really not certain. Also, should I just send them a note with money and ask for a search or what??. It could run in to alot of money if there are alot of people to look for and there are many churches to choose from.
Thanks alot in advance for any help anyone could send our way !
Blessings,
Marilyn
