Nan,
There is a rather extensive (but undocumented) genealogy of many of the
names you mention in the History of Chautauqua County, New York and Its
People, published by American Historical Society, Boston, 1921. The record
is viewable at Heritage Quest, and describes the ancestry of Marietta L.
Gifford Case, d/o Elihu and Mehitable Shearman Gifford.
It includes dates of birth and death for Benjamin Gifford and Esther
Crandall, their son, Jeremiah, etc. See also New England Historical and
Genealogical Register, Vol. 134, p. 125-126 on Benjamin Gifford/Esther
Crandall and their children. Benjamin's ancestry is described in detail.
There may be other references to your families within the Register, and
especially the Almon Daniels, Maclean McLean series on William Gifford of
Sandwich, Mass.
For the Shearmans, you may wish to consult Some of the Descendants of Philip
Sherman, First Secretary of Rhode Island, by Roy V. Sherman, self-published,
1968, 1974? It is available in some libraries, e.g. LDS Library Salt Lake
City, DAR Library, Allen County, Indiana, Buffalo Erie County Libraries Main
Branch and possibly other regional libraries.
Good luck with your research.
