First, Clay, thank you for asking the question about the ancestry of the Alabama John Gifford and for sharing your doubt that the online trees are accurate. As you have noted, the Alabama John S Gifford is not the son of Abraham and Lucy Sherman Gifford. Unfortunately, I do not know your ancestor's lineage. I suspect the proof of that is not online, but in probate and other records.

I have personally researched the descendants of Abraham and Lucy Sherman Gifford (my line), and in an earlier post, I offered the analysis of which John S. Gifford was their son in hopes that we could put to rest the errors in the online trees on your ancestor from Alabama. Apparently, there is still misinformation in the online trees.
