You could well be correct about there being a female Gillingham somewhere back your ancestry. There were Gillinghams in Chester Pa from a fairly early date. The steps to take would be to look at the mother of your first Gillingham Miles. If her surname is known and is not Gillingham then you will need to look at her mother etc etc. If you care to let me have the surnames involved I can check them against my database - sometimes female line surnames as Christian names can last in a family for a very long time.

However, there are alternatives to having a Gillingham ancestor: it is possible that Gillingham Miles was named for a family friend or even GodParent. The early Gillinghams tended to be Quakers and I believe that they did occasionally name children for family friends - perhaps someone who knows more about this than me could comment?
