Hello GOODHEW Listers,
This is my first message to this list, but you might have 'seen' me elsewhere!
My greatest problem in this genealogy game is my paternal
great-grandfather. He is an elusive soul, but this is what I know about him:
My research in the GODHEW branch has been mainly in listing descendants of
William Francis Goodhew, who was born in Kent, England on 8 Sep 1840 (I
have no firm proof of that date). He came to Australia in his late teens
(supposedly jumping ship while serving in the Royal Navy in India [although
this deserter tag is unconfirmed]). The year he joined the navy was 1857,
but the PRO has no listing for WFG. He worked on the Tug Service in
Newcastle Harbour for a time when he first landed in Australia. He married
my great-grandmother, Anney Morgan, in Newcastle, NSW, Australia in 1866 in
the local Wesleyan Church and was mainly involved with coal mining in our
Hunter Valley.
No papers here reveal details of his parents or siblings. My attempts at
finding birth records for William Francis in UK have failed. The official
register at the UK Office of Population Censuses and Surveys failed to
reveal anything in a paid-for search over (+ or -) 5 years of 1840. Also
he is not in the IGI. It would appear that the parish records have yet to
reach the official register.
A local distant cousin has another theory, that WFG was not born with the
Goodhew name, but may have been a son of a lady who later married a Goodhew
and the boy took the name of his stepfather. It would mean that our search
for birth or christening records would be fruitless.
At present I'm endeavouring to put as many Goodhews as I can find records
for into a database, with the hope that something exciting may pop out in
the future. Perhaps it will help to have *your* GOODHEW stuff. I would like
a GEDCOM file of that part of your tree, if you care to send it. Or perhaps
just a text file showing info you have already for any Goodhews. Thanks.
Anyway, if any of this happens to mesh with what you are researching I
would be very pleased to hear from you. Although I have nothing before WFG,
I would be happy to send you details of his descendants if that would help
you.
