[1] Capital Charge Against A Seaman : -

A Court martial was held on board the Victory Flagship on Monday morning at
Portsmouth, to try a seaman named JOHN GRIER, on the (2) two following
charges: (1) September 9th, 1861, [he] struck an officer: (Lieutenant)
ANDREW JAMES KENNEDY (2) Threatening Language towards (Lieutenant) MORGAN
SINGER......[long article], and results: -

The court was cleared, and after about (3) three quarter's of an hour's
deliberation the prisioner was found guilty on both charges, & sentenced to
be kept in penal servitude for 10 years.
