Evelyn Greer Special Olympics Northern Ireland


Evelyn Greer, recipient of an OBE for her work in promoting the 2003 Special
Olympics World Summer Games, which took place in Dublin, Ireland.
Evelyn Greer, who helped found Special Olympics Ireland in 1979, was awarded
an OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for services to sport in the British
New Years honors which are bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II. Greer received
the award, announced at the end of December 2003, for her work in promoting
the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games. She works for a range of
organizations promoting the rights of those with disabilities.

In addition to her OBE, Greer received an MBE (Member of the British Empire)
in 1979 for her work. She has been a board member of Special Olympics
Northern Ireland for 23 years. Greer was also a member of the Special
Olympics International Board of Directors at its inception and served until
1993.

In 1978 Special Olympics was introduced to Northern Ireland and the Northern
Ireland Special Olympics Committee (NISOC) was set up in the form of a
trust. Its aim was to establish Special Olympics within the province and to
give persons with a learning difficulty in Northern Ireland the opportunity
to participate in organized competitive sport at Provincial, National,
European and International levels.
