My 3rd great-grandmother in Boston was a young widow in 1840 with 2
minor children. She never remarried.

I know very little about her circumstance. Would there have been any
type of welfare system in that time period or would she have had to rely
on herself and relatives for support? I don't believe there is any way
to tell if she worked.

Should there have been any type of probate action after the death of the
father?
