I need help on the following surnames, all settlers of Connecticut. (I
know all of the descendants of Connecticut settlers are really on the
ESSEX-ROOTS list.) These surnames all correspond to noted families, but I
don't find where they link up, and from what I read in genealogical
journals today, I'm not alone.

Can anyone tell me what is the ancestry of Thwaite Strickland, of
Cambridge and DEdham, MA, and Hartford CT? I learned only that there is
nothing to link him to Sgt. John Strickland of Watertown who went to
Connecticut - whatever his ancestry is. I've found plenty on Strickland
royal lineage, Stricklands OF THWAITE, but not this person. Most
STrickland activity on the web pertains to southern Strickland families,
no reason to think they are related. I looked in NEHGS, TAG has no
comprehensive index. And no Strickland genealogy in my library.

Is there anything on the ancestry of Paul Peck of Connecticut? A couple
of sources thought he might be the son of William Peck and didn't specify
further. Or is that Edward Shephard may be the son of a William? Amazing
how if the parent wasn't of that town, they had no interest. Peck
genealogy identifies Paul Peck as a stray line.

Edward Shephard married Violet Somebody. Theories of who Violet Somebody
was seem to be a dime a dozen. Anyone have it straightened out yet? Last
article on the Wolverton/ Wolterton will puzzle I found was very recent.
Anyone have a clue who Edward Shephard came from? Someone in ancestral
file had him going back to Benedicta Daye who appears to actually be
someone's conjecture of who were the parents of Violet Somebody.
The other two Shephard families are variously gentry, and a Puritan
clergyman who came from a humble family but married a Yorkshire knight's
cousin, and hobnobbed with Mather and company.

There was an article by Lawrence Shephard in a source not available to me
with a new theory of who Violet Somebody was, cited in the most recent
Wolterton article I found. Does anyone have a copy?

Yours,
Dora Smit
