I too had a family member for whom I could not get a record of birth I spent
several unhappy times arguing with the personnel in the Town Clerk's office.
All my grandmother's other records said she was born in Brockton, MA. I knew
her mother and father's names, her date of birth but I was told over and over
again. "No record." Then I searched the Mass Index of Births for that date
in 1890 and found her surname on the correct date. Sure enough There in
Brockton was a "Female Dearth" and also listed were her parents. So it is
worth trying to look on the date in the State Index under just male or female
and the surname.. Keep trying and good luck.
