I want to timidly say, that I have also photographed dozens of grave
stones, and I am speaking of pre-1860s, using nothing more than a 35mm camera
and ordinary (200) color film, and have had good to excellent results. I am
certainly, at best, a very amateur photographer.

On occasion I have tried to "clean off' some green stuff (unscientific
term), but don't like to do even that, as tiny pieces of the stone do come
off also. Some of the procedures mentioned sound a little harsh, but probably
are perfectly safe. I would urge those who are trying for the first time, to
do so without any aids. Practice locally, different film, different angles,
etc. and see what works for you. I guess I would like more folks to be of the
"less is best" school. Regards, Joan in Eugene, OR
