Subject: Re: Ship Masters--Licensing 1700s?

I believe there were documents for captains of ships that traveled to foreign
ports, but I don't know of a central repository. I found one at the Essex
Institute for one of my ancestors. It was a broadside, quite large, written
in several languages, signed by President John Adams, and, interestingly
enough, dated two years after his supposed death. That finally led me to his
actual death date two years later. I have also seen ship's registers for
early towns kept where ever they keep the town's historical documents. These
listed both owners and captains. Think of it like a trreasure hunt.
