Taunton State Hospital was opened in 1854. In 1923 it averaged 1400 inmates
according to the book, History of Bristol County (pub. 1924).

My great grandfather died in this hospital about a year after a suicide
attempt
and my family referred to it as the Taunton Assylum.

If anyone knows how to obtain records from here, I would like to know.
