But I bet you didn't get to play in the brig on rainy days like I did.
My best friend's father was Commander when I was in 4th grade. Back then
Old Ironsides had very few visitors and her father used to let us play
below decks. He would even give us the keys to the brig and we'd lock
each other in.
One time her older brother and his friend locked me in and left me there
for what seemed like forever. I was determined not to panic and give
then a show so I sat very quietly and tried to imagine what it was like
to be a prisoner there in the 1800s. I got so quiet, her brother got
worried about me and let me out. I wish you could have seen the
expression on his face when he looked in through the bars and saw me
sitting there so quietly.
