Subject: [GM-L] Need search at Peabody Essex Museum
Date: Sun, 26 Dec 1999 15:16:43 EST
To the list:
I need a focused look at the sacramental records of St Peter's Episcopal
Church, Salem. These records are housed at the PEMuseum.
I would like to find and, I hope have copied, the baptismal records for
Samuel Hodgdon of Salem, born about 1750-52 and the same record for his son
born ca. 1774-5.
The record is clear on a grandson baptised 31 Oct 1802. (Salem Vital Records
to the Year 1849).
Samuel Hodgdon (b 1753 ?) married Martha Masury, (b. 1751--this is a strong
probability-- her age at death in Jan 1831 is given as 79 in the vital
records.) Ceremony performed by Rev James Diman 16 March 1775(Salem City
Clerk's Office). Would like a photocopy of the record.
Samuel Hodgdon (b 1775 ?) married Betsy Gibbs [Bariepo] 1 July 1798, (Salem
Vital Records to 1849). Their son Samuel--as indicated above--was baptised at
St Peter's in 1802. I am especially eager to determine the father's birth
date and this may not be easy to do. In the entries for Salem deaths for
Vital Records to the end of the Year 1849, there is this:
Hodgdon, Samuel master of the brig America [on his passage from Charleston to
Copenhagen. n.r. 9], at sea, --------, 1824, a. 50 y. [Issue of June 4. n.r.
9.]
I do not have a copy of the volume and so do not have the key to the
abbreviations.
However if the age cited is correct, it appears this Samuel Hodgdon was born
some months before his parents were married. This may account for there
being no baptismal entry, but I am not clear yet about treatment of bastard
children in the town at the time.
Any assistance will be appreciated. I will gladly reimburse a research
effort.
Replies by any medium welcome. E-mail at .
