It is evident you're not using all the search options available.
You can do a general search or a custom search, for IGI, Ancestral File, and
Pedigree File.
In each of the above you have the following options.

First and Last name (Single person)
you have the following options
4 Events, using range and year
Location: worldwide or by country
USA by all or state

First and Last name and Spouse (for marriage)
you have the following options
4 Events, using range and year
Location: worldwide or by country
USA by all or state

First and Last with fathers name

Father and mother search.
(for children)

The information you retrieve is from their files only, the search engine
does not
search web for sites. And the information is only as good as the
information submitted
by folks like you and me.

The LDS site has more versatile options for searching than any other sites
I've came across
I find the site more useful, than say Family Tree Maker, Ancestry.com, or
some of the
others where you only have the one option "name only" and you get more
unrelated
folks than you can shake-a-stick at.
And as you put it you must muddle through it all, hoping for the one "John
Doe" your looking far.
I thought this was the way it worked with genealogy or haven't I been told
some dark secret about
researching. Did I miss something along the way?

And the LDS site gives you some very useful clues, in where to look, as do
most sites.

That's true,
But I thought I might be able to save a lot of other people from a wasted
effort. From the response and thanks I have had from my note I guess that
is
just what is happening!

IT IS A REALLY LOUSY SEARCH ENGINE!
