MUSEUM TO TELL LDS HISTORY

The Peabody Essex Museum, a respected museum of "art, architecture, and
culture" in Salem, Massachusetts, is preparing an exhibit related to the
Church. "In 1836 Mormon church founder Joseph Smith came to Salem to
research his family roots and preach in a city already steeped in
theological debate and missionary activity. At the time many men and women
were traveling West from Massachusetts on a trek of faith to find a home
for their new church. For many, Smith's preaching provided another
catalyst for that historic westward migration. The Peabody Essex Museum
will mount a commemorative exhibit that recreates this little-known
history of the early years of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints (LDS) and gives visitors a chance to trace their own genealogy.
"From New England to the Great Salt Lake: The Mormon Legacy of Faith"
opens to the public May 5 and will run through August 27."
