============================================================
AUBURN, NEW YORK DIRECTORIES, 1889-1892

Situated in the Finger Lake area of New York, Auburn is the county seat of
Cayuga County. This database is a transcription of three city directories
originally published between 1890 and 1892. In addition to providing the
resident's name, it provides information regarding their address and occupation.
This collection includes the names of over 51,200 people, mostly heads of
households. For those seeking ancestors from central New York, this can be an
informative database.

WHITE COUNTY, TENNESSEE CENSUS, 1920

Officially declared a county on 11 September 1806, White County, Tennessee was
created from surrounding Smith and Jackson Counties. This database, taken from
microfilm copies of original federal documents, is a collection of census
records from the county in 1920. Entries in the collection include the
resident's name, age, sex, race, marital status, and place of birth. Also
provided for each individual is the district and house number in which they
lived. It contains the names of nearly 15,700 individuals. This information will
be of interest to those who have familial ties in the county and can used as a
starting point for further research into the lives of these ancestors.

MICHIGAN MILITARY RECORDS, 1775-1836

Although not officially a part of the United States until after the American
Revolutionary War, Michigan attracted thousands of veterans who fought in both
the war for independence and the War of 1812. This database, originally compiled
in 1920, is a collection of burial and pension records for residents of the
state prior to 1836. It includes the names of men buried in the state and the
source from which the record was taken. Also included is a list of pensioners
who received land as bounty for their service. It provides the name of over
1,000 men. For those Ancestry.com patrons seeking early Michigan ancestors, this
database can be a great source of information.

JAMES STEELE, SKETCH OF CALIFORNIA HISTORY, 1889

Visiting the California in the 1880s, James Steele, after returning to the East
Coast, wrote a book based on his adventures in the state. This database,
originally published in 1889, is a transcription of that narrative. It provides
a sketch of California's history before the Gold Rush and includes descriptions
of the remnants of that history which existed during Steele's visit. It includes
descriptions of the San Gabriel and San Juan Capistrano missions and commentary
on the Spanish-American culture of the region. For researchers wishing to better
understand the history of early California, this can be an informative database.

"THE WORKS PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION"
by Juliana Smith
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
============================================================
Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the helm as president in 1933, while the United
States was engulfed in the Great Depression. As soon as he took office, he began
pushing through legislation that would become the nation's largest relief
program--the Work Projects Administration (WPA). The WPA was later renamed the
Works Progress Administration.

The WPA provided much-needed jobs for millions of out-of-work Americans. Its
legacy to family historians is a wealth of information in the form of indexes,
bibliographies, inventories, life histories, photographs, artwork, and other
historical materials.

While some of these projects are fairly well-known, such as the Soundex Index to
the U.S. Federal Censuses (1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920), and Soundex Indexes to
Naturalization Petitions in several regions of the country, many of the projects
were smaller and may have escaped the attention of many researchers.

There are several bibliographies that may be of use to family historians, some
of which I located using the LDS Family History Library Catalog online at the
FamilySearch site at: http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp. By
clicking 'All Searches' and then 'Author Search.' I got different results using
the terms:
WPA
Works Progress Administration
Work Projects Administration

WPA took me to another header for "United States. Work Projects Administration"
under which I found several general bibliographies, as well as locally specific
resources for various states. The other two searches gave results by state.
(This makes a good case for trying different wording whenever you use this type
of catalog or are doing other types of searches.)

Because of the scope and varying content in the works of the WPA, it is often
difficult to pin down what exactly is available for a particular area, but there
are now numerous sites on the Internet that house material from the WPA and are
a goldmine for genealogists. Below I have listed a selection of WPA based
resources that can be found on the Internet. It is by no means everything that
is available, but it gives a good example of the variety and value of the
information that is contained in the works.

I have also created a specific message board at FamilyHistory.com
(http://www.familyhistory.com/lists/topics.asp) that will focus on these
projects that are going up online. I will be adding the contents below, and any
other sites or resources that I run across, in the categories listed below
(Articles, General, African-American, or by state) and I hope that others will
add any that I have missed and any that are put up in the future. Hopefully, in
time, with your help, this can become a valuable resource in locating these
wonderful projects.
