Subject: [GM-L] Susanna READ & Moses NICHOLS, Freetown, MA - FOUND THEM!
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 01:55:17 EDT

Hello,

Yesterday, I wrote a post about my two Susanna READ's, both living in
Freetown, MA, same name, same year. Coincidentally, today I received my
envelope from the DAR. One of them was the application for Moses NICHOLS,
husband of the Susanna READ I was trying to find.

I now know that his wife was Susanna READ #2 (from my post yesterday). She
was born Jan 12, 1767, parents of Benjamin READ & Sarah EVANS. His parents
were Joseph READ & Grace PRAY. His parents were John READ, Jr. & Mary
PEARCE. His parents were John READ, Sr. & Hannah (poss. Hannah PAYBODY).

After at least TEN years, I now know that Susanna READ married (1) Daniel
GRINNELL (7/10/1783) and (2) Moses NICHOLS (10/9/1785). This second m. was
in Freetown, MA.

Moses NICHOLS & Susanna Read (Grinnell) had a son, Howard NICHOLS, b. 1799 in
Plymouth. It was Howard I was looking for over ten years. I could never
find anything about his birth, despite my family knowing this (they were
close, and are buried together - at least most of them).

Howard NICHOLS, b. 1799, had a bother, Benjamin Read NICHOLS, b. 1803, and
who m. Elizabeth GRADY & Sarah May DANLY. The application was from the
descents of Benjamin Read NICHOLS. Other siblings with Howard & Benjamin:
Susan NICHOLS (b. 1805, m. Harvey BUSHNELL, Rev.); Polly NICHOLS (m. John
CORNISH); Edward NICHOLS; Otis NICHOLS (who I always knew was Howard's
brother - Howard m. Otis' first wife (Sarah CLARK) after he died, and it was
she who went to CA with him; Sally NICHOLS (m. Elkanah WOOD); Putnam NICHOLS;
Howard NICHOLS (yay!); Daniel NICHOLS & James NICHOLS.

Moses NICHOLS, father of these children, died in Plymouth, MA, 11-15-1845.
Therefore, most or all of these children were born in Plymouth, MA. Perhaps
one of the first few ch. were born in Berkley or Freetown, MA. They were m.
in Freetown, MA in 1785. It could have been in either of their towns. But I
think they were prob. b. in Plymouth, where books are hard to find!

For Moses NICHOLS, was, during the American Revolution, living in Plymouth,
MA and Berkley, Bristol County, MA, while acting in the capacity of Private
in MA Militia. He was under first with Capt. Sawyers Company, later with
Capt. Hoskins Company.

If anyone know more about the siblings of Howard NICHOLS (all b. +/-abt.
1800), please write! I do have the rest of the line (going forward to
Benjamin Read NICHOLS).

Thank you. Betty, Middleboro
