Hello,
About this,
> http://www.fitzware.com/mass27th/links.htm
> This site lists other regiments that are online. The 47th is not listed: Are
>you sure it was the 47th?
and this,
>I have found it was under command of Fletcher Webster post 13
------------------------------------------------------------------
-There was indeed a 47th Mass Vol Inf regiment but it was under the command
of Col. Lucius Bolles Marsh who was a Boston merchant. He is not the Marsh
in "Jordan Marsh, Co." Fletcher Webster is not listed in the Field and
Staff of the 47th.
-The 47th spent their time in New Orleans in 1863 as the siege of Port
Hudson was occurring. They did not see any combat service to speak of and
there was no regimental history published for this unit. So that is why so
little about it is found on the internet. The brief history and list of
members that is usually found seems to be taken from the Mass.
Adjutant-General 8 vol. Report published in 1931.
-Col. Marsh was a published genealogist. He gives a fuller account of the
movements and activities of the 47th in this work; Lucius B. Marsh, "The
Genealogy of John Marsh of Salem and His Descendants, 1633-1888" (Amherst,
Mass. : J. E. Williams, 1888), pp184
-The 47th was transported from New York to New Orleans on the steamer USS
Mississippi. You can see a romanticized picture of this ship going down
under enemy fire at Port Hudson at,
<http://www.intac.com/~blenderm/53rd_Mass_f/53rd_imgs/USSMississippi.jpg>
-A picture, taken late in life, of perhaps the last member of the 47th is at,
<http://users.erols.com/jreb/pic/faunce.jpg>
-I am very interested to learn what you find out about this unit at the
Brockton Historical Society.
Regards,
Paul Annapolis, Maryland
