See if your local library will order microfilm for you from the National
Archives. Then go to the NARA Soundex Machine page at:
http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/
and type in the name you are searching for; you will get the Soundex code for
that name. Once you have that code, you can ask your librarian to order the
Soundex microfilm that corresponds to your Soundex code for the census area
and year you are looking for.
Once you receive the Soundex microfilm, locate your ancestor (Soundex is
confusing at first; the last names are grouped together by sound, so you end
up searching alphabetically by first name within your Soundex code).
When you find your ancestor, the Soundex card will give you county, ED #,
page and line number where that person can be found. Then you can order the
appropriate census microfilm and you will be on your way.
