Sandy,

I don't know where you got the information that finding a birth certificate
for someone born in England is as difficult as finding a birth certificate
for someone born in the whole of the USA. In the first place, the size of
England would be the equivalent of one of our *smallest* states. In the
second place, the Brits have kept centralized records since well before the
mid-1800s. These records used to be kept at St. Catherine's House on the
Kingsway in London, but are now held at:

The Family Records Centre,
1 Myddleton Street,
Islington,
LONDON EC1R 1UW

They have a website:

If you happen to be in London, here's how to get to the Family Records Centre:

Here's a map:

You can order birth certificates by mail through:

General Register Office
PO Box 2,
Southport
MERSEYSIDE, PR8 2JD
England
+44(0)870 243 7788

Or you can order a certificate by telephone on +44(0)151 471 4816 or by
fax on +44(0)1704 550013
If you want priority service call +44(0)151 471 4572 or fax +44(0)1704 568315

A full birth (marriage or death) certificate costs £11.00, £22.50 for
Priority Service. Extra copies are £6.50 each. You can pay by
International Money Order or by Visa/Mastercard.

They have a webpage at:

Halfway down that page you will find << Birth | Marriage | Death >>
hyperlinks. If you click on 'birth', you can load a pdf file of the
Application and print it out. If you fill out the info and include your
Visa/Mastercard details, this can be faxed to the numbers shown above or
you can send it by post.

Here's some advice from GenUK about doing genealogical research in the UK:

So what's so difficult?

Good Luck!

Lois
