Humphrey Barrett House (Monument Street)
Built by early settler Humphrey Barrett in the seventeenth century, this
house remained in the Barrett family until 1827, when it was left by a
childless descendant of the first Humphrey to Abel Barrett Heywood. A.B.
Heywood successfully farmed the land. The farm was sold to S.A. Hartshorn,
later at auction to D.G. Lang. Lang built a new house on the property in 1885
and tore down the old Humphrey Barrett House in 1886.

Nathaniel Barrett prob. the son of Joseph & Mary Barrett of Chelmsford
b. 1724. He m. Martha (Wheeler) (?) and lived in the vicinity of
Flushing Pond. Children:

5. James Atwater Barrett b. l832 he was a clerk in the
store of James P. Swain & Co. in NYC. He enlisted
in July l86l as lst Sergt. in Company H, Capt.
D. W. Strickland, 48th Reg. New York Volunteer Inf.
James H. Perry, Colonel. They were ordered south
in the expedition to Hilton Head, S.C. He witnessed
the capture of the fortifications at Hilton Head and
the victory Nov. 8, l86l. In l863 he went in the
expedition agains Charleston, S.C. by way of Folly
Island and also in the reduction and capture of Fort
Pulaski, Ga. His regiment participated in the capture
of Morris Island, Charleston, S.C. on July l0, l863.
and in the unsuccessful assault upon Fort Wagner.
Sergeant Barrett was promoted to 2d then Lieut. He
later promoted to Major, then promoted Past Provost
Marshal of Raleigh. Major Barrett administered the
oath to a cousin of Pres. Andrew Johnson. His regi-
ment was discharged at Hart Island, N.Y. harbor. He
had an enviable reputation as a soldier and an officer.

in the Revolution; was at the capture of Burgoyne l777
at Saratoga and a meritorious officer. He chosen deacon
of the church l779 and d. l808 age 67.
