A Descriptive and Historical Sketch of
Boston Harbor and Surroundings (1885)

"In the eighteenth century, the Boston Harbor Islands became a popular resort
area. Excursionists from the mainland flocked out to inns and guesthouses on
the Brewsters and Long and Peddock's islands to imbibe the salty air and
indulge in the illicit pleasures of gambling and watching boxing matches. In
many cases the fresh produce form the island farms was served in inns and
hotels."
