Hello fellow rooters! Taking this opportunity, while Bassetts are on line,
to ask that you please respond to my request for any and all Bassett
relatives you have turned up that might have had kin down south or if they
themselves wound up down here (here being SC/GA/NC area).
The family story goes that before the Am. Revolution there were 3 Bassett
brothers who came to America from England. Two (unnamed) settled in
northern states, but Francis went to VA and later settled in NC. He was a
professor of languages, having a speaking knowledge of seven. His son,
William, married Mary Phillips, a descendant of the Flora Stewart who was
born during the voyage to America when her parents fled from England after
the execution of Charles I. Mary Phillips Bassett's line is authenticated
under the JO7 line of the Clan McAllister of America. William and Mary had
3 boys: Stephan (1787), Thomas (1792) and Francis (aft 1792). They moved
to SC. Later Mary, with the boys, returned to NC and made her home with
her sister, Katie who was by then Mrs. William Gibson. Katie's husband was
a breeder of blooded horses and owned extensive lands along the Cape Fear
River. Meanwhile William bought an island off the coast of SC/GA and
settled there. Recent discovered letters show William had another wife
there @ 1803 but by 1805 she was dead. When William died in 1810 in
Barnwell District SC he had yet a 3d wife of very young age. His sons in
NC returned to probate their father's will and bury him. His inventory
shows he was a learned man of some property and one item, an enlisted man's
revolutionary uniform, was purchased by his brother John from his
estate. It is felt Francis, the father, was perhaps the soldier. We can
find but one mention of this service though and that he had a close
relationship with a fellow soldier named Thomas Gill.
I would appreciate any information you may have turned up as to the
identity of the other 2 brothers of Francis and where they came from in
England/parentage/etc. Who was the wife of Francis? Look forward to
