*Adam Gould, b. abt. 1650/53, M. Sept. 28, 1687, Woburn, to HANNAH
KNIGHT, b. Mar. 25, 1654, Woburn, dau. of Joseph Knight.
The family also lived at Salem
One of the early families at Groton was the Gould or Gold family, Adam Gould
being the first of that name to live at Groton.
NEHEMIAH GOULD, b. 1715, settled first in Groton, MA. He married Nov. 1, 1739
to ESTHER BOWERS, b. Oct. 15, 1715, dau. of Samuel and Esther (Sawtell)
Bowers of Groton. According to the Hist. or Littleton, NH, he then moved near
the Massachusetts line, but in New Hampshire. He was killed July 20, 1758 at
Half Way Brook, near Lake George, in military service, a Corporal in Lt.
Thomas Lawrence's Company.
One of his sons was JAMES GOULD, b. Feb. 22, 1743, who married May 27, 1765,
in Hollis, NH. to MARY LOVEJOY, b. Sept. 27, 1747, dau. of Jonathan and Mary
Lovejoy of Hollis. He lived at Hollis until 1770, then Cockermouth, NH, by
1777, in Hanover, NH. He was a Sgt. in the Revolution in the Regiment of
Rangers commanded by Major Bedel, and was seriously wounded in the Battle at
Bemis Heights on Sept. 19, 1777. From 1785-1790, he served as the coroner for
Grafton County, NH.
One of his sons was PHINEAS GOULD, b. July 18, 1767, Hollis, NH, d. May 14,
1851, Haverhill, NH. He married Jan. 15, 1789 to BETSY SMITH. His descendants
wrote the name as GOOLD.
One of his sons was MARQUIS LA FAYETTE GOOLD, b. July 12, 1805, Lyme, NH, who
died Jan. 10, 1883, Littleton, NH. He married Sept. 15, 1837 to EMILY DODGE
RUSSELL, b. Feb. 23, 1817, Newburyport, MA, who died in Littleton, NH, Apr.
15, 1850. His second wife was SUSAN JOHNSON LEVERETT, b. June 24, 1819,
Windsor, VT., dau. of John T. Leverett. He was a merchant by trade, a
Republican and a Congregationalist by religion. He served as Selectman at
Littleton, NH, Town Clerk, Town Treasurer, Fire Warden, and was a Lodge
member. He also served as Delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1850.

PHINEAS RUSSELL GOULD, b. Mar. 21, 1842, in Littleton, NH, liv. there 1900,
son of Marquis L. A. Goold. He M. Jan. 10, 1869 to SYLVIA DANFORTH, b. Sept.
1833, dau. of Henry Danforth of Lisbon, NH. He was a printer for the
Haverhill, "Republican" newspaper, a clerk in a store, and finally served as
Postmaster of Littleton. Missing the newspaper business, he helded to found
the "Littleton Journal", then the Courier Publishing Company. he then became
publisher of the "Littleton Courier" until 1899. He was also a Selectman for
the town of Littleton, and served on the Board of Health. He and Sylvia had
no children.
ALICE HALE GOOLD: B. Feb. 8, 1848, Littleton, NH. She M. Nov. 17, 1873 to
THERON ALLEN FARR, b. Feb. 12, 1836, in Littleton, son of Gilman and Philena
(Allen) Farr of Littleton. He served as a Capt. in the 5th NH. Infantry. He
was a Republican, a member of the Board of Health, and a Congregationalist.
They had two children:

d. May 1886, Woburn, MA, dau. of Ezra Bliss Elkins of Littleton. He M. (2)
Aug. 10, 1892 to AUGUSTA M. FELLOWS, b. Apr. 3, 1857, Chelsea, MA, dau. of
Moses A. Fellows.
