Subject: [GM-L] GROVER, Elisha, NY,VT,MA, bet. 1776-1780
Date: Sun, 16 Sep 2001 05:28:49 -0400
I am seeking the parents/birthplace of Elisha Grover. He was born about
1776 - 1780, probably in CT or VT. His father may have been Jacob,
Eleazer, or possibly Aaron Grover. These men were all in the area of
Windham County, VT when Elisha was growing up.
Elisha married for the first time to Polly Bell, the daughter of Joseph
Bell, in 1801. Joseph died in 1803 and mentions his daughter, Polly
wife if Elisha Grover, in his will. He owned land in Guilford, Vt in
1798. He had a son born in 1805. He purchased land in DeKalb, NY in
1808 and 1811. He served from NY in the War of 1812. In 1815 he
married Polly Smith in Guilford, VT and was the same year warned out of
Halifax, VT He was warned out again in 1817 and he also purchased more
land in NY. His daughter was born in 1818 and according to her death
certificate the family was at that time living in Halifax, VT. He shows
up for the very first time in a census in DeKalb, NY in 1820. In 1824
and 1825 he was paying taxes in Halifax, VT. In 1830 the census places
him and his family in Leyden, MA. where his son, Landon, was born. In
1835 he was again in Halifax, VT where his son, Henry, was born. In the
1840 census Elisha is with his family in Sunderland, VT, but Sunderland
has no record of his ever being there. He is not mentioned in the 1850
census. In 1854 Polly Grover, widow of Elisha Grover, died in Leyden,
MA. So presumably, Elisha died between 1840 and 1850. He is, however,
as elusive in death as he was in life. Three of us working together
have combed records all over the states of VT, NY and MA and have not
come up with a death record for Elisha (or Horace, as he is listed in
son Josephs obituary). If anyone has any information on this Elisha or
any ideas where to look next, please contact me.
