The following extract from an email I received from my Essex researcher may be of help to other listers who find themselves with an ancestor who may have married at an early age.

"The Age of Marriage Act of 1929 forbade marriage under the age of 16. Until then, girls of 12 and boys of 14 could legally marry in England". The Family Historian's Enquire Within: Pauline Saul.
