The universal concensus is

A subscription was when a person paid someone else to serve in their place,
and was an acceptable practice for a man with family responsibilities.

Thank you to all who responded. I wish he hadn't done that because those military and pension records sure would come in handy now. Of course, if he had served, who knows if I would be here doing this research right now.
