**DEATH
Prominent Pugwash Citizen Gone
In the death of ex-Warden Alonzo SMITH, early Tuesday morning, Pugwash
has lost one of its best-known citizens, and Cumberland has lost one of
its most respected businessmen. The deceased had been in poor health
for several months past, but it was only during the past few weeks that
his condition was known to be critical and then it was hoped the finer
days of the summer would mean his restoration to health. His passing at
the age of 72 years, after a remarkably full and successful life,
removes a man who figure was very familiarly known to Amherst people and
who was widely respected wherever was known.
Mr. SMITH was a son of the late William SMITH of Wallace, a well known
magistrate of that district and spent the earlier part of his life in
that community in farming. He early took an interest in public affairs
and besides being one of the Old Guard behind Sir Charles TUPPER, he
was elected three times to the council from the district of Pugwash.
The confidence of his fellow councilors in his ability was shown in his
election 1897 to the wardenship of the county. Shortly after removing
to Pugwash he and R.L. McDONALD formed a company, then known as the
Maritime Clay Works for the manufacture of brick and from a small
beginning the works developed to be the biggest industry in Pugwash,
employing some sixty hands and became one of the most successful in
Eastern Canada. He continued in the management for over twenty years
until a few months ago when broken health made it necessary for him to
retire.

The deceased was a model manager in his relations to his employees,
easily approachable, always willing to help, and was never known to turn
away anyone in need. His religion was one of kindness and active
support of the Methodist church of which he was a member. In polities
he was one of the old line of Conservatives who kept the county true to
the party for so many years, and at one time was president of the
Cumberland County Liberal-Conservative Association. He was, in fact, a
man of whom any community could be proud.
The family to mourn are a widow who was a former Miss STEVENS of
Wallace, and three sons and four daughters. The sons are Chesley,
Postmaster at Pugwash; Ainsley, in Providence, R.I. and William at
home. The
daughters are Mrs. BISHOP, Truro, Mrs. Chas. HUSSY, Vancouver, Mrs.
NEARY, Kentville and Mrs. Will McLEOD, Pugwash. All these will have the
sympathy of a host of friends in their great bereavement. The funeral
will be held at Pugwash, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 oclock.
