Hello,
I have come across something curious. My great-grandmother's father was
Charles Wellington RICE and he was born in Lubec, Maine, around 1850. He
was a member of an extended RICE family which .. started out as four Rice
cousins .. who migrated from Marlborough, MA, to Nova Scotia, and most
settled in Digby, NS.
Right around 1800, some of them moved across the water and settled in Lubec
and Eastport, ME. Daniel V. Rice was born right around 1800, and he and
his wife had 10 children in Lubec, Charles Rice being the youngest.
Right around 1870.. Charles Wellington Rice met .. Adelaide Crosby
Hutchinson who was living in Winchester, MA. We do not know how they met
.. unless Adelaide was visiting Maine on vacation. We also do not know
where they married. But, they appeared to start their married life in
Winchester, and in 1876 they had a daughter, Louise W. Rice in Winchester.
Two years later they had Edith Crosby? Rice. We knew that Charles and
Adelaide "separated," but we didn't know when.
We have found an Arlington Directory from 1896-97, which showed that Mrs.
Adelaide Rice.. and Charles W. Rice .. were boarding .. in different houses
on different streets.
What is curious is .. in the house which Charles Rice was living in .. on
Academy St. in Arlington .. was also a Harold Rice, a Marshall N. Rice, and
a William G. Rice.
We didn't know that Charles Rice had ..family members.. in MA with him ...
vs. his family members in Lubec and Eastport, ME. I am curious whether
anyone knows anything about these Rice men.
(Mrs. Adelaide Rice, and their 2 unmarried daughters, Louise and Edith, were
boarding at 14 Central Street.)
In the 1900 Census, Mrs. Adelaide Rice was living in Arlington. In the
same household was Miss Edith Rice, Sanford and Louise Kidder and their baby
daughter, and Adelaide's brother, George H. Hutchinson. (possibly his
wife had just passed on??)
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
