Like the list of Arboretum Tree Dedicators, The Dawes family history is
filled with notable individuals. Beman Gates Dawes was a descendant of
William Dawes, who came to the New World in 1635 from England.19 The family
had already been in the colonies five generations when Beman Dawes'
great-great-grandfather, William Dawes (1745-1799), rode into American
history with Paul Revere and Dr. Samuel Prescott on the night of April 18,
1775 to warn of the coming of the redcoats.20
