Subject: [GM-L] .. CLARK ... LAVARE .... MANCHESTER .. families in MA and RI ....

Hi again, I am very happy .. .. a very helpful person has just responded
to my query on James CLARK .. and told me that .. Lavair .. was not .. the
first name of James' wife ... it was her surname ..

In 1829, in Westport, MA, James CLARK married .. Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE ...

In addition to that .. he provided me with her maiden name .. She was Miss
Rhoda MANCHESTER ... and (also in Westport) .. she married Epaphroditus
LAVARE .. in 1816 ...
And .. Epaphroditus and Rhoda had two sons: Arnold B. LAVARE, b1820, and
William T. LAVARE, b1823. Ephaphroditus was "lost at sea" in 1825...

So the 1850? Census for Westport, MA, which mentioned Rhoda and Mary Anna
CLARK .. was talking about a mother and daughter ...
:o)

... I took a quick look at the LDS web site .. and it mentions Epaphroditus
LAVARE .. and his two sons .. but that record showed him as marrying in
Tiverton, RI ...

I also looked up Rhoda MANCHESTER .. and it turns out that is a fairly
popular name .. And, it appears that the first MANCHESTER arrived in
Newport County, RI .. in the early 1600's .. This means that Rhoda could
have come from a RI family .. (Although .. I did see you few
MANCHESTER families in Martha's Vineyard .. in the 1700's ...)

There was a Rhoda Manchester born around 1788 in Tiverton, RI, but she
married a Sylvester GIFFORD .. in 1805 .. and they had six children
between 1809 and 1813 ... .. ... Not yet knowing .. when and where my Rhoda
was born .. many possibilities are possible ..

I've thought ..for a long time .. that my ancestors .. James and Lavair
CLARK .. were one of those ... lost couples .. but they have now been
found!
:o)

Have a good day,

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. Just a reminder .. that James CLARK and Mrs. Rhoda (Manchester)
LAVARE ... had a daughter born to them in 1837 in Westport, MA ... Her
name was Mary Anna CLARK. I do not yet know .. if they had other children
.. But, I am now finding out that Mary Anna .. had two, older
step-brothers ..
Arnold and William LAVARE ..

(Mary Anna CLARK married John DEXTER .. where/when ??)
