Hello,
I don't know when they were built, but I believe probably by the late
1800's, each County in Massachusetts had either a "House of Correction" or a
"Jail." In Middlesex County, there were two - "south" Middlesex would
have had the one in Cambridge, and "north" Middlesex had the one in
Billerica. Perhaps someone else could offer the location of the one for
Norfolk County.
