Subject: Carleton HUTCHINSON, Military Uniform ~1900-1910
Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 10:12:14 -0400
Hello,
When my sister and I were very young girls, we lived with our parents on one
of the HUTCHINSON Farms in Winchester. (corner of Ridge and Hutchinson)
We moved out ~1952, and my great-uncle and his wife moved out ~1960. The
farm was sold at that time and we had to empty out the large farmhouse.
One of the things found in the very large attic was an antique photo album
(tintypes) of various members of the HUTCHINSON extended family. My
sister took this with the intention of identifying the people in the photos.
(Our HUTCHINSON and CROSBY ancestors of Winchester and Arlington and their
spouses.)
We were at a family gathering yesterday, and my sister brought me a Xerox
copy of one of the photos. I had been asking her recently about our
great-great-grandmother's only brother, George HUTCHINSON. And, I believe
George only had the one son, Carleton HUTCHINSON. That name jogged my
sister's memory, and she went and found Carleton's tintype photo in the
album. He is dressed in a military uniform.
My sister "guessed" it might be a Civil War uniform, but I just checked the
information, and the 1880 Census showed that Carleton wasn't even born
during Civil War years. He was born in 1870. My guess is that
Carleton is in his 20's or early 30's in the photo. That would place him
in uniform in the 1890's to 1910 timeframe.
World War I didn't start until 1914. And, at this second, I'm not
remembering any war right around 1900.
I'm not very familiar with military uniforms, but my friend thinks Carleton
was a Sergeant at the time the photo took place. The photo is only a
chest-to-head photo, and the only description I can offer is what seems to
be a short, white collar on the jacket, and buttons going down from that
collar. My friend thinks it "might" be a Navy uniform, and there is a
pin on his chest which "might" be a "Navy cross." ???
I was just wondering if anyone recognizes this uniform, or could tell me
anything about Carleton's - service years.
His full name is Carleton Homer HUTCHINSON, and until he joined the service
he probably was living in Arlington. I'm wondering if he "served" in
the Navy, but did not fight in any major wars.
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. The name written under his name in the photo album is .. Mary
Elizabeth Wright Hutchinson. I "assume" that to be his wife's name.
But, I would have to dig through my notes to find out what I have on his
marriage.
