I had a lot of my early Mass. and Maine ancestors who were buried on their property. Back Yard burials.

My interest has been renewed by hearing there is an archaeological dig going on at Newcastle, Maine in the area where my ancestors lived.

Were there any general rules that local governments imposed on these burials? Such as depth of burial, etc.

Also, would there have been any plot maps that might have shown where the burials occurred?

This is a novice question, but I'm curious.
