Subject: Boston via Canada--First Papers

I'm having a problem with naturalization papers--

If a foreign national entered the U.S. via Canada in the mid-1800s, it's my understanding that they would have had to fill out the "first Papers" on arriving on U.S. soil.

Whether they traveled overland or by sea from Canada to Boston they would have first papers.

Where would I find them?
