Those old Indian trails were the basis of all our early roads. The Indians
came down
from Canada, thru the area later Charlestown, New Hampshire and was the
reason*
men from north mid-central Mass. towns built the old Fort 4 there - and also,
the Indians canoed down the mighty Connecticut River. The old fort had a
dock
at that river. Trade went up and down.

*Reason was to kill those Indians before they burned towns like Groton,
Lancaster
etc. Fort was built 1740 - Indian trepidations began 1675 in burning towns in
those
north central Mass. towns

I have transcribed the book (History of the Old Fort No. 4) and its online at
my
pages http://tfeeney.esmartbiz.com/janice.htm
